A log cabin has drawn Dorothy back to a place she loved as a child. But the island has a history not only of wonderful childhood memories but also of sadness for her.
The author expertly blends a love for the island with an undertone of domestic instability that permeates the women’s lives in Dorothy’s family. In an amazing plot twist, we learn of the island's sinister history and of an unusual ‘guest’ who saves the day.
This is a compelling book that reveals a realistic family: their joys, mishaps, and survival. It was a thoroughly enjoyable book that left me with the knowledge that, through it all, a family can overcome all odds. In the end, a young woman learns how to break free from her own abusive past.
Secrets and Lies...
Oh wow! I cannot say enough good about this book! It’s gritty, realistic but with an otherworldly air. It deals in abuse both mental, verbal and physical. In manipulation, adultery, and so much more.In reading Racheal’s grandmother’s journals, she was able to see herself and the situation she was in..then do something about it.It deals with a long line of Racheal’s family and all the mess that she learns about when she reads the journals.And Jimmy…sweet Jimmy. My heart aches for him.This book is fantastic! It’s gritty and realistic. I highly recommend it and I’m personally going to suggest it for my book club.👍🏻

Findlay Ward certainly knows how to captivate an audience with her words. The story of Rachael reading the journals of the matriarch of her family whilst discovering some deeply hidden secrets was truly entertaining! A must read - and cannot wait to continue the story on.
