The smallest moment can change everything.

I’ve been working on my next domestic thriller, and there’s one moment I keep coming back to—the instant when a life that feels carefully controlled begins to unravel.
This new story introduces Corey, a single father who arrives in a small town with his five-year-old daughter, determined to build a safe and quiet life.
But sometimes the past won’t let go.
This part early in the story won’t let go of me. It sits in that space I’m drawn to—the hesitation before a decision, where instinct and fear collide.
As a parent what would you do if this happened to you?
Corey stared at the unknown number on his phone’s display.
It would be easy to swipe the notification away and carry on with the new life he’d created for himself and his daughter. He stared at the screen. It vibrated in his trembling hand.
It could be an annoying sales pitch, or a warning shot. A finger hovered in midair for a heartbeat before he tapped the screen to open the message.
Unknown: You can’t hide her forever.
It’s a single moment in time. But it changes everything. Because once a message like that exists, there’s no going back to the illusion of safety.
And that’s the question I keep circling as I work on this book:
Can you ever really start over . . . if someone, somewhere, still knows how to find you?
